USE -:
Kenter shackle on board is used to connect two sections of anchor chain links onboard in the case when either link is either corroded , bent or damaged beyond its allowable usable limit .
NEW KENTER SHACKLE
THE SCENARIO -:
Scenario
During routine anchor inspection at prolonged anchorage, the starboard anchor chain was lifted and a bent shackle was discovered.
NECESSITY FOR RENEWAL -:
Renewal was critical, as the bent shackle could fail at any time, potentially resulting in the loss of the starboard anchor. Such an incident could cause significant financial loss and prevent the vessel from berthing or maintaining class compliance.
This incident /finding was also recorded as a Near miss record for the month .
THE OPERATION -:
- Office approvals were obtained, and the starboard anchor was lifted and stowed.
- A hot work permit was issued, and personnel followed all safety precautions.
- Chain links before and after the bent shackle were brought on deck, tension eased, and the anchor secured with a bow stopper and windlass brake.
- The bent link was positioned for gas cutting, ensuring it was free from chain load.
- Fire extinguisher and charged fire hose were kept ready. The bent link was cut and removed using gas cutting.
- Both parts of the new kenter shackle were installed, and the locking pin hammered securely in place.

FINAL OPERATION -:
Finally welding was carried out in both holes of the locking pin of the kenter shackle and job was completed .
After that the anchor was heaved up and down for two three times to ensure satisfactory operation
