1. Objectives
The objective of this procedure is to define the responsibility of the ordinary seaman,
trainee ordinary seaman/ deck boy whilst on board the vessel.
2. Responsibilities
The ordinary seaman, trainee ordinary seaman/ deck boy reports to the Bosun.
3. Instructions
3.1 General
The ordinary seaman, trainee ordinary seaman/ deck boy reports to the Bosun. It shall be the
Responsibility of the Ordinary Seaman, trainee ordinary seaman/ deck boy to amongst others:
» At Sea:
Under conditions of restricted visibility or congested waters or as the deemed necessary by
the Master he will be responsible to the OOW as additional lookout and general bridge
duties besides any other duties assigned to him by the OOW or the Master
» In Port:
Under certain circumstances as determined by the Chief Officer he will be responsible to
the OOW for:
• Assisting the AB on watch with his duties
• Any other duties assigned to him by the OOW
» Other duties:
Responsible to the Bosun for:
• General deck maintenance as directed by the Bosun
• any other duties as assigned by the Bosun.
3.2 Special Tasks
The Ordinary Seaman, trainee ordinary seaman/ deck boy shall amongst others:
» Familiarise himself with appropriate regulations and work procedures.
» Execute assigned tasks under the supervision of the Duty Officer, Chief Officer, Bosun or
assigned Able Seaman, when required.
» Execute other assigned tasks safely, to the best of his ability, and to report hazardous
conditions without delay to the proper supervisory authority.
» Ensure that work such as entry into enclosed spaces, hot work and work aloft shall not be
undertaken without prior approval by the Chief Officer.
» Familiarise himself with all safety equipment and safety procedures onboard.
» Take part in the safety culture on board.
» As the opportunity arises, to understudy the AB.
