Third Officer

As the Third Officer on board, you’ll work under the guidance of the Master and Chief Officer to support shipboard duties and operations. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Keeping a navigational watch to ensure safe and efficient operations.
  • Assisting the Second Officer with correcting and maintaining the inventory of navigational charts and publications.
  • Supporting the Second Officer in maintaining navigational and GMDSS equipment.
  • Managing the maintenance and inventory of all life-saving and fire-fighting appliances on board.
  • Supervising cargo operations and monitoring ballasting and de-ballasting processes.
  • Overseeing garbage management under the Second Engineer’s guidance.
  • Assisting with pollution prevention duties under the Chief Officer and Second Engineer’s supervision.
  • Promoting safe working practices on board as a Safety Representative, guided by the Safety Officer (Second Engineer).
  • Helping the Shipboard Training Officer train deck cadets on the use and upkeep of life-saving and fire-fighting appliances as the Safety Equipment Officer.
  • Managing inventory, accounting for the Officer’s Club, and handling bond control, including indenting, inventory, and record-keeping.
  • Coordinating cash disbursements and allotments for the Master’s disbursement.
  • Assisting with port documentation tasks to ensure smooth operations during port calls.

Hatch Covers Opened & closed in accordance with the Loading/Unloading Operation Plan. Check securing arrangements when open / proper securing for sea once a hold is completed
Cargo Loading/Stowage/Discharging/ Trimming/ Securing in accordance with the Chief Officer’s Instructions. Ensure Cargo appearance & & specifications are in accordance with the Shipper’s Declaration
Safety
LSA & FFA Inventories/ Requisitions/Routine Inspections/Operational Checks/ Monthly Status of LSA & FFA o/b
Familiarization Duties Familiarization upon joining and of Junior Officers & Ratings
Drills & Training Execution of Drills/ Demos of use of various LSA/FFA
Security
In Port Access Control in accordance with the Security Level being maintained, shall be taken by way of the following: a) Frequent Security Patrol rounds to inspect Restricted Areas (Duty AB/SHM or Officer) b) Strict checking at the Gangway Access Point in accordance with the relevant instructions in the Gangway Security Register c)Ensure securing of Restricted Areas & Unauthorized Access Points
At Sea In accordance with the SSP & relevant MarSec Level being maintained
At Anchorage In accordance with the SSP & relevant MarSec Level being maintained
SMS Procedures
Quality & Safety Management Recommended careful reading of the relevant Shipboard Procedures
MARPOL
Garbage Management Plan Execute the Garbage Management Plan under the supervision of the 2nd Engineer & Master

The Master shall have full authority and responsibility for regulating and assigning Navigational and Cargo Watches and implementing planned maintenance of hull and equipment to achieve best all-round operational efficiency. In this respect, the Master may assign additional responsibilities to the Deck Officers as deemed fit.
