Deck Cadet

  1. Objectives

The objective of this procedure is to define the responsibility of the Deck Cadet whilst on board

the vessel.

  1. General

The Deck Cadet reports to the Chief Officer. It shall be the Responsibility of the Deck Cadet to

amongst others:

» Perform sea watches and cargo operation watches under the guidance of a certified

officer and to carry out duties as instructed.

  1. Instructions

Special Tasks

The Deck Cadet shall additionally ensure the following:

» Familiarise himself with appropriate regulations and work procedures.

» Execute assigned tasks safely under the supervision of an officer or rating, and to report

hazardous conditions without delay to the Duty Officer or the Chief Officer.

» Familiarise himself with all safety equipment and safety procedures on board.

» Take part in the promotion of safety culture on board.

» Carry out a laid down formal training program, including the upkeep of his training record

book as determined by the training authority.

» Complete the Monthly Performance Reports as required under his company procedures.

» Complete the requirements under his distance learning program or trianing institute together with the company requirements.

» Maintenance of his accommodation in a clean and tidy condition.

» Any other duties assigned to him by Master, Chief Officer or other officers as instructed by

the Master. The Deck Cadet is to take every opportunity to understudy the other officers and

seafarers on board to increase his knowledge and understanding of the ship. The Deck

Cadet, however, is not to be given any job for which he is not qualified and is not to be

given the responsibility of supervising other.
